Home Owner's Editorial

Welcome to our comfortable, energy-efficient home that relies heavily on a renewable energy source, the sun. The goal of the Gridless Urban House project, sponsored by the State Energy Program of the Kansas Corporation Commission, is to educate citizens about alternative energy solutions, which promote energy conservation, energy efficiency, and stunt the growth for energy demand. We will try to get to the point where we could actually disconnect from the electricity and natural gas grid if desired. If we do not get to the point where disconnecting from the grid is feasible, we will show the economics involved.

The objective of this web site is to give you more of a "feel" for what it is like to live in this energy efficient home rather than go into detailed installation techniques. For instance, sure everybody can convert to energy-efficient light bulbs, but what are the "in and outs" that may not be explained on the light bulb package? Also, what are the economics involved in a decision to replace every light bulb with energy efficient, as compared to just the standard bulbs as they burn out and need to be replaced? Links are provided which get into the detailed "nuts and bolts" of incorporating energy efficient features into the home, and for installing renewable energy systems.

Whether you have an existing home or are preparing to build a new home, you will find many practical applications of energy efficiency on this web site. Even though your own personal goal may not be to live in a gridless home, almost everybody likes to save money on energy costs and most people enjoy helping our environment by reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. We hope you enjoy the tour of our home!
